Menopausal Hormone Therapy
For decades, women have suffered needlessly due to fear of the risks for hormone replacement therapy. In recent years, convincing evidence has clearly demonstrated the low absolute risks and favourable benefit-risk profile for prescription hormone replacement therapy when used for managing symptoms in early menopause and for the prevention of bone loss in women at elevated risk of osteoporosis. Peri menopause is an often neglected time of tremendous hormonal fluctuations that also may benefit from hormone therapy.
Signs you’re in perimenopause
Perimenopause literally means “around menopause” and usually begins with the onset of irregular periods (+7 d) or other menopause related symptoms. For many women, this begins in their early 40s and lasts until the year after the final menstrual period. This is usually the most symptomatic, but overlooked time for women. Many women are not given effective treatment options for their fatigue, insomnia, mood changes, weight gain, skin and hair changes. Hormones therapy can help.
A variety of hormone replacement therapy formulations are available that allow individualization of hormone therapy to maximize benefits and reduce risk. These include lower doses, different types and transdermal routes of delivery. And when conventional hormonal options are not a perfect fit, custom compounded bioidentical hormone therapy can be explored.

Dr. Shaw has decades of experience and has done extensive training in hormone replacement therapy for menopause. Her approach begins with a thorough health assessment and includes open discussion about individual risk-benefit profiles. She then works with her patients to find the right balance of hormones and provides ongoing monitoring to ensure safety and effectiveness.
Intrauterine contraception (IUDs)
Intrauterine contraception (IUDs) offers perimenopausal women safe, highly effective, convenient, and long-term contraception. The use of IUDs has increased dramatically in recent years, partly due to it now being covered by the BC MSP plan and by advances in the comfort and precision of insertions.
Hormonal IUDs are effective for at least 5 years and can dramatically reduce menstrual bleeding. For women who are considering surgery to treat heavy menstrual bleeding, IUDs can provide an excellent alternative with similar results to endometrial ablation. LEARN MORE >
