Endometriosis
Endometriosis is defined as the presence of endometrial-like tissue (the tissue that normally lines the uterus) outside of the uterus. It is the most common cause of chronic pelvic pain in women but sadly takes an average of 9 years for a woman to get a proper diagnosis. This is partly because at this point in time there are no tests to diagnose endometriosis, just laparoscopy. The exact cause of endometriosis is unknown but underlying mechanisms are thought to be both inflammatory/immune related and hormonal.
