Endometriosis is defined as the presence of endometrial-like tissue (the tissue that normally lines the uterus) outside of the uterus. It is the most common cause of chronic pelvic pain in women but sadly takes an average of 9 years for a woman to get a proper diagnosis. This is partly because at this point in time there are no tests to diagnose endometriosis, just laparoscopy. A thorough intake and advocacy from an experienced care provider is a critical part of getting the diagnosis right, especially for those women suffering from infertility. Endometriosis has been estimated to be much more prevalent in the infertile population and an affect fertility by:
Scar tissue and adhesions
Altered ovulation and oocyte production
Increased inflammatory cells in peritoneal fluid
Endometrial progesterone resistance
Inadequate uterine contractility
The exact cause of endometriosis is unknown but underlying mechanisms are thought to be both inflammatory/immune related and hormonal. Therefore, a naturopathic approach should include lifestyle counselling to avoid environmental triggers, nutritional counselling, digestive and intestinal support, hormonal balancing and pain management as needed.
