What is naturopathic medicine?
Naturopathic medicine is a distinct system of primary care that addresses the root cause of illness and disease by promoting health and supporting the body’s natural ability to heal. It is evidenced-based natural medicine, blending modern scientific knowledge with traditional or more natural forms of medicine. Naturopathic physicians help patients shift their focus from one of avoiding disease to one of achieving optimal wellness.

I want to refer my friend/family member to Dr. Shaw. Does she treat conditions other than fertility and women’s health?
Dr. Shaw is happy to welcome friends and family members to her practice. All naturopathic physicians are trained in general family medicine and focus on treating the individual as opposed to treating a specific condition or set of symptoms. If you have further questions please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Do I need a referral to see Dr. Shaw?
You do not need a referral from your GP to become a patient of Dr. Shaw. However, if you have been referred by your ND, acupuncturist or other healthcare provider, it is helpful if they provide a referral letter ahead of your first visit.
My friend suggested I see a Chinese medicine doctor. How is Dr. Shaw different?
Chinese medicine (including acupuncture) is just one of the many modalities which naturopathic physicians are trained to use. However, naturopathic physicians are also able to act as primary care providers using many of the standard tools used by your regular family physician. Many people choose to have their acupuncture done by their ND, while others decide to include both a doctor of Chinese Medicine and an ND on their healthcare team.
Will the cost of my visit be covered by MSP?
At this point in time naturopathic physicians are unable to bill MSP for consultations or lab testing. Most extended health plans will cover the cost for naturopathic and/or acupuncture visits. Please check with your insurance provider for more details.
